Knock & Nash’s Screen Acting Intensive is a five-day course dedicated to the craft of acting for camera. Based in the heart of MediaCity in Manchester, the course offers actors the opportunity to work on screen performance in a focused, practical training environment. Drawing on techniques associated with practitioners including Meisner, Michael Chekhov and David Mamet, the course introduces actors to approaches that support truthful and responsive screen performances. Across the week you will rehearse and film scenes using professional, Netflix-approved camera equipment, working under realistic on-set conditions. Central to the training is the relationship between an actor’s internal process and the technical demands of screen performance. Through rehearsal, filmed scene work and detailed playback analysis, actors explore how performance choices translate to camera and how adjustments in listening, intention and connection shape what appears on screen. The course places particular emphasis on truthful engagement on camera, helping actors remain present and responsive through multiple takes. Participants also develop a deeper understanding of active listening and collaboration on set, recognising how performance is shaped through connection with scene partners, directors and the camera itself. You will also work with scripts to develop clear objectives, playable actions and an understanding of how performances adapt to different shot sizes and filming styles used in film and television. Actors gain practical experience with the technical aspects of screen work, including blocking, hitting marks, preparing for screen tests and working with a director behind the camera. Each day includes filmed scene work followed by detailed discussion and feedback. Participants receive copies of their filmed scenes to take away and review, allowing them to reflect on their work and continue developing their screen performance. To ensure the work remains focused and rigorous, groups are limited to eight actors, allowing each participant meaningful time working on camera.
